Heavy Downpour Destroys Houses in Malawi

Heavy rains that were accompanied by strong winds experienced in Traditional authority (TA) Katuli in Mangochi Malawi have destroyed 112 houses and left five individuals with casualties according to District Protection Committee (DCPC).  Amongst the five people who were injured are two women and three children. The patients were able to treated and discharged on the same day at the local hospital.

Mteleta who is the Group Village Head from the area said that some houses were partly affected while others were wrecked. Mtalete called on people with the goodwill to come to the rescue by providing food, tents or other building materials for a temporary sheltering of the victims.

Rose Shaibu who was one of the affected said that the rains carried away the iron sheet roof of her house exposing whatever that was in the house to massive destructions. Things destroyed in the house included fertilizers, maize, and other personal belongings. All these damages took place on 22nd November 2017.

On 13th November 2017, the high stormy winds destroyed a section of the roof of Magochi Police Station’s main office block. The effect brought to stand the operations of the police post. The government is called upon on making sure that people are housed in durable houses to avoid further damages. Ministry of housing and planning is looking into the matter for a long-term solution.
